Questions & Answers

Q.

*Artsbang:*Thank you so much for being here!

 (.

*Artsbang:*

A.

*Bassette:*Thanks for having me.  我非常喜欢你们的网站!(I love your website!)

(.

Q.

*Artsbang:*So you're 23, living in Los Angeles, and just graduated with two degrees from atop 25 university.  Why move to China?*

(.

A.

*Bassette:*Well, in my hometown of Arcadia, CA, I was actually one of the only white kidsaround.  All my friends were Asian, and I was surrounded by Chineseculture, but knew I could never truly understand it without seeing the countryit came from.  I came to China for a month one college summer, and totallyfell in love with Shanghai.  I knew that when I graduated, I wanted tocome back and share my music with a new audience.

Q.

*Artsbang:*What's your favorite thing about China?  What's changed for you since youarrived?

(*Artsbang:*

A.

*Bassette:*Well, my favorite thing would definitely have to be the people.  AndEle.me.  *Laughs*  And a lot has changed.  Most importantly,I've started playing every instrument on my records, and producing them myself.

Iwas born without a right ear drum, so can only hear out of one ear. Because of that, I never thought I'd ever be able to produce something on myown - when I worked as a composer and songwriter in the US, I would always relyon someone else for the final mix.  But when I moved to China, I decidedthat I wasn't going to let that stop me anymore.  The response has beenawesome.  Most people have no idea I only hear half of what they do, whichis  the best case scenario as far as I'm concerned!

Q.

*Artsbang:*So you just released your first cover.  The song you chose is almost 20years old - why "朋友"?

A:

*Bassette:*Well, first, it's a beautiful song, whether you know Chinese or not.  Igrew up listening to it and always wondered what it'd be like to put a verse inEnglish, so more Westerners could appreciate its imagery.

And the fact that it's so old I actuallyreally liked, because I saw an opportunity to reimagine it and expose it toChinese youth who might just think of it as some old song their Dad sings withhis KTV buddies.  The original's a classic, so my challenge was to modernizeit without changing its essence.  I'm really proud of what I ended upwith.

(.
