Awards play an important role in celebrating creativity, innovation and effectiveness, and promoting excellence in advertising. Prestigious awards like Cannes Lions set the ‘gold standard’ that the whole industry and creative ecosystem aspire to create.

More than ever, Cannes Lions seeks to spotlight the work that drives progress through creativity. As such, the Sustainable Development Goals Lions celebrate creative problem solving, solutions or other initiatives that harness creativity and seek to positively impact the world.

Entries will need to demonstrate how they contributed to or advanced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development across people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnerships. All entry proceeds generated by the Award will be donated to SDG projects in consultation with the United Nations.






As the Jury President for Sustainable Development Goals Lions of 2023 Cannes Lions, Jean Lin, Global Chief Culture Officer of Dentsu Group Inc., shared the criteria for this category.







This year as we judge Sustainable Development Goals Lions we are looking for excellent work that help to redefine where the industry is going. 

We are trying to look for work that fulfils some of the following criteria:


One: work that advocate, educates and influence consumer behaviour to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle because we all know the consumer is a key part of the equation to make the work better. Every time we buy something we are casting a vote for the future of the world that we would like to live in. 

Secondly, we are looking for work that demonstrates Growth through Good. How can we ensure that brand and enterprise embrace a mindset not just driving and delivering exponential growth but considered sustainable growth that can make the world better and kinder.

The third, we are looking for work that embrace SDG as the part of their business strategy. Rather than some good will and CSR campaign that a brand randomly connected with, there needs to be a clear foundation of how that connection made SDG part of the strategy. Because the only way sustainability will work is to be part of the economic value chain.


This is an important element when looking at SDG Lions and all the other awards that try to measure impact. 

We can do this together, because this is the most important industry movement and contribution that we can make. With the urgency of the actions we have to take, we all need to be all in and truly deliver a better society that is thriving for all.
