Last week, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland), Micheál Martin, undertook an official visit to Shanghai and Beijing. One of the key objectives of this trip was to strengthen trade and bilateral relations between Ireland and China.

Micheál Martin is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician serving as Taoiseach since January 2025, having previously held the position from 2020 to 2022. Martin served as Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence from December 2022 to January 2025.

During his visit, our team at Enterprise Ireland China organized two official signing ceremonies between our Irish client companies in sectors such as Fintech and Pharmaceutical. We also organized a high-level Irish-Sino Transnational Education Showcase Event where over 13 Irish universities and colleges, together with their Chinese partners, then took to the stage to showcase their collaborations and participate in signing ceremonies formally announcing their partnerships and ongoing progress. The significance of the Prime Minister’s presence at each of these occasions demonstrates the continued support of the Embassy of Ireland with Enterprise Ireland in facilitating relationships between Irish and Chinese companies.

Enterprise Ireland also had the pleasure of inviting over 100+ representatives of our client companies, universities and their partners to the Business Government Dinner in both Beijing and Shanghai. In both cities, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin delivered an official address highlighting the importance of trade and economic cooperation between Ireland and China. The evening provided a great platform for Irish and Chinese business leaders to come together and celebrate achievements.
