On March 20, the People's Government of Chengdu Municipality issued “Carbon Peak Implementation Plan of Chengdu Municipality.” The plan encourages the application of photovoltaic, hydrogen energy, shallow geothermal energy, biomass energy, etc.. Promote the construction of hydrogen production station, liquid hydrogen station and hydrogen refueling station network, and accelerates the construction of half-hour hydrogen refueling network. By 2025, the green hydrogen production capacity strives to reach over 6,000 tons. Vigorously develop the new energy automobile industry, focus on the development of electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, accelerate the construction of China-Germany cooperation in intelligent connected vehicles, internet of vehicles standards and testing and validation of pilot demonstration projects, and promote the design and production of batteries, motors, electronic control. Develop the green hydrogen energy industry, focus on the development of hydrogen R&D, hydrogen source preparation, hydrogen storage and transportation, and key materials for hydrogen fuel cells. Extend the development of hydrogen application demonstration and hydrogen inspection and certification, consulting services, etc., promote the development of the whole industrial chain of hydrogen "production, storage, transportation and utilization", and create a "green hydrogen capital". Build an "electric corridor" and "hydrogen corridor" in Cheng-Yu area, and jointly strive for the creation of a national hydrogen fuel cell vehicle demonstration city cluster.
Henan plans to build a national hydrogen fuel cell industry base
March 14, People's Government of Henan Province issued "Accelerate the manufacturing industry" Six New "breakthrough implementation program of Henan Province". The program proposes to break through the development of proton exchange membrane, membrane electrodes, catalysts and diffusion layer and other key materials for hydrogen fuel cells, and construct national hydrogen fuel cell industry base. Develop strategic frontier equipment, including hydrogen energy equipment. Focus on hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen refueling, hydrogen power generation and other links, and comprehensively improve the supply capacity of high-end hydrogen energy equipment. Make breakthroughs in low-cost, high-efficiency, long-life proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, and solid oxide electrolyzer hydrogen production process. Accelerate the development of hydrogen production equipment, hydrogen purification equipment and hydrogen storage and hydrogen supply equipment, and enhance the level of key valves and high-pressure parts supporting. Carry out research and development of key materials and components for mass production of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Research and develop hydrogen power generation equipment such as fuel cell system and vehicle hydrogen supply system.
Shunyi District,Beijing promotes use of hydrogen batteries in driving school training vehicles and examination vehicles
On March 14, Shunyi District People's Government of Beijing Municipality released ”2024 Ecological Civilization Construction and Ecological Environmental Protection Work Plan of Shunyi District”. The plan proposes to actively promote new energy vehicles. New and renewed buses (excluding emergency protection vehicles and mountain route vehicles) should be new energy vehicles. New and renewed taxi (excluding social security vehicles and individual vehicles) should be battery electric vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Encourage the new and renewed regional tourist passenger transportation shuttle buses, driving school C2 training vehicles and examination vehicles to use battery electric vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Priority is given to new energy vehicles when customizing buses. Strive for the proportion of new energy buses to reach 50% by the end of the year, and the proportion of purely electric or hydrogen fuel cell cruising cabs to reach 84%. Accelerate the construction of charging infrastructure and build charging infrastructure networks at a high level.
Stadler steams into record books with hydrogen-powered trainset
Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler has entered its hydrogen-powered locomotive into the Guinness World Records for a 2,800km unbroken journey. It set the record for the longest journey ever completed by a hydrogen train designed for passenger use, without refuelling or recharging. The record attempt was made at Stadler’s test track in Pueblo, in Colorado, overnight from the 20-22 March 2024. The record-breaking test ran for a total of 46 hours, completing 2,803km (1,741.7 miles), on a single tank of fuel. The locomotive utilised a power pack containing fuel cells and hydrogen tanks, along with a battery to supply the vehicle drive at any time. Stadle’s propulsion system can allow the train to operate all day without refuelling. The hydrogen-powered train from Stadler has 108 seats and additional standing room. The maximum speed is 130km/h.
World's first commercial e-fuel plant opens, producing diesel from green hydrogen
Electrofuels (e-fuels) company Infinium has launched what it says is the world’s first commercial scale facility making drop-in ready e-fuels, located in Corpus Christi, Texas. The company combines green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce petroleum-based products such as sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF), eDiesel and eNaptha and can be used for heavy transportation and chemical processes. According to the company, its e-fuels are the only drop-in ready e-fuels produced in North America to receive ISCC Plus certification from International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. Valued at $6.9bn in 2023, the global e-fuel market is expected to reach $104.2bn by 2033-a CAGR of over 30%. One of the main challenges facing the market is achieving cost competitiveness with traditional fossil fuels.
Germany earmarks up to $3.8bn for green H2 imports
Germany will earmark up to 3.53 billion euros ($3.8 billion) of public funds to procure green hydrogen and its derivatives between 2027 and 2036, the economy ministry said recently, as Berlin bets on the fuel to help decarbonise Europe’s biggest economy. The aim of the funding measure is to bring together supply and demand, both in terms of quantities and prices and money will come from the government’s Climate and Transformation Fund. Germany is seeking to expand reliance on hydrogen as a future energy source to cut greenhouse gas emissions for highly polluting industrial sectors that cannot be electrified such as steel and chemicals and reduce dependency on imported fossil fuel.
