Develop new hydrogen energy according to local conditions! 2024 National Economic and Social Development Plan released

On March 13, the Xinhua News Agency released the "Report on the Implementation of the National Economic and Social Development Plan for 2023 and the Draft National Economic and Social Development Plan for 2024". The report proposes to actively promote the construction of large-scale wind power and photovoltaic bases focusing on deserts, the Gobi, and desert areas. Steadily promote the construction of large-scale hydropower and nuclear power projects, orderly promote the construction of pumped storage projects, and develop new energy storage, hydrogen energy, and biomass energy according to local conditions. For the first time, the installed capacity of renewable energy power generation exceeded 50% of the total installed capacity, and the annual power generation capacity was nearly 3 trillion kilowatt-hours. The installed capacity of new energy storage has been put into operation at more than 31 million kilowatts, an increase of more than 260% over the end of the previous year. Strive to develop circular economy, improve the policy system for the recycling of decommissioned wind power and photovoltaic equipment, and further promote the recycling of used household appliances, automobiles, electronic products, iron and steel, and non-ferrous metals.


The State Council: Hydrogen ships occupy an important place in equipment renewal action program

The State Council released an action plan to promote large-scale equipment renewals and trade-ins of consumer good on March 13. The plan proposes to support the renewal of transportation equipment and old agricultural machinery. Strengthen capacity building for industrialization of electric, hydrogen and other green aviation equipment. Accelerate the scrapping and renewal of old ships with high energy consumption and high emissions, strongly support the development of new energy-powered ships and improve the supporting infrastructure and standards for new energy-powered ships.Gradually expand the application range of new energy-powered ships, such as electric, liquefied natural gas, biodiesel and green methanol.


Xilingol League of Inner Mongolia: Promote the clustered development of green power, hydrogen and ammonia production and other Industries

On March 12, the Administrative Office of Xilingol League of Inner Mongolia issued the 2024 National Economic and Social Development Plan of the League. The plan proposes to promote the clustered development of equipment manufacturing, energy storage batteries, advanced new materials, fluorine chemical materials, green power + high load-energy, green power + hydrogen and ammonia production and other industries. Strive to reach 20 million kilowatts of new energy installed capacity throughout the year, power generation capacity of about 43 billion degrees. Wind power, power transmission, energy storage, hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing and other strategic emerging industries as the focus, promote a number of projects which extend  supplement and improve the chain put into operation, strengthen the new energy equipment manufacturing industry, and accelerate the construction of new energy industry chain. Focus on affecting the future development direction of the leading industries, around the advantages and characteristics field of the Xilingol League, communicate with top talent inside and outside the region in the low-carbon energy, new energy storage, hydrogen energy and other areas. The innovation team should carry out more than 6 key technology research projects.


Breakthrough in key technologies of liquid hydrogen storage and supply for heavy vehicles in China

Recently, the Sixth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Group that the research on key technologies for liquid hydrogen storage and supply in heavy-duty vehicles, led by the 101 Institute of the Academy, has made significant breakthroughs. The project took three years to complete seven key technological breakthroughs in vehicle mounted liquid hydrogen storage and supply systems. The research team has achieved the integration and application of liquid hydrogen storage and supply system with heavy-duty vehicle fuel cell power system and whole vehicle through this project, solving the two major problems of heavy-duty truck electrification power performance and range. It is reported that a 49 ton diesel heavy-duty truck emits carbon dioxide equivalent to the emissions of 40 small cars. Compared with 49 ton diesel heavy-duty trucks, each liquid hydrogen heavy-duty truck can reduce carbon emissions by 140 tons per year, achieving zero emissions for long-distance heavy-duty vehicles. In the future, 101 Institute will continue to promote key technological breakthroughs and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, accelerate the landing of demonstration projects for the entire liquid hydrogen industry chain, and actively build an ecological chain for the liquid hydrogen industry.


US government schedules national hydrogen refuelling station roll-out from 2027

The Biden administration has published its National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy to support the decarbonisation of medium- and heavy-duty trucks with an eye toward ubiquitous and convenient access to hydrogen refuelling stations and electric chargepoints by 2040. As a comprehensive roadmap for zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (ZE-MHDV) charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure from 2024 to 2040, the strategy is divided into four phases up to 2040. Currently (2024 – 2027), priority transport hubs are to be set up based on freight volumes. Between 2027 and 2030, the focus will be on connecting hubs along important freight corridors, followed by the expansion of corridor connections in order to initiate the development of the network (2030-2035) and, finally, further densification through linking regional corridors for nationwide access (2035-2040).


Japanese company develops device to make hydrogen and oxygen on the moon

Takasago Thermal Engineering has handed over a specialised electrolyser which can use water resources from the surface of the moon to produce hydrogen and oxygen. This equipment has been designed and tested to ensure stable fluid control even at a sixth of Earth’s gravity, stay steady through vibrations and shocks during launch and landing, and maintain equipment temperatures even in the vacuum of space. The electrolyser will be launched to the moon during the second Hakuto-R mission in late 2024, on a Falcon 9 rocket made by Elon Musk's SpaceX. Takasago Thermal Engineering said when water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen on the moon, hydrogen gas can be used as fuel and oxygen as air, to allow long-term lunar missions.


World's third-largest automaker to introduce eight new hydrogen-powered van models in Europe

The world’s third-largest automaker Stellantis which owns brands such as Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall has said it will release hydrogen-powered versions of eight of its current battery-electric van models, in a bid to cement its standing as the undisputed leader in zero-emission propulsion in commercial vehicles in Europe. The eight fuel cell hydrogen versions of mid-size and large vans consist of Citroen e-Jumpy and e-Jumper, Fiat Professional E-Scudo and E-Ducato, Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano, and Peugeot E-Expert and E-Boxer. For the mid-size vans, a second generation of the fuel cell system delivers a segment record range of up to 400 km and refueling time of less than four minutes. For the large vans, the addition of fuel cell technology brings range capability of up to 500 km and refueling time of just five minutes.
