龙延香来自于抹香鲸。抹香鲸吃了乌贼之后无法消化其内壳（海螵蛸），此物会刮伤消化道，因此，抹香鲸的胃分泌出一种油乎乎的物质（胆固醇）将这堆内壳包裹成一团。理论上这属于一种病理性结石。
