The KIK English Program consists of three fundamental aspects. First is the LIDA curriculum, which consists of two primary elements;second is the Highscope Daily Routine Program and finally;Era Books Program. This aspect and two elements are designed to help the student to develop into a complete little person, emotionally, mentally, physically and the inner self. The Highscope Daily Routine is designed to help the student to understand order and to build anticipation for each part of the daily routine. For example; Morning Message, Large Group Time, Plan Do Review, Small Group time and Outside Activities. Morning Message The student can anticipate and the teacher can excite the student for the day’s activities through Morning Message. This consists of attendance, day, month, date, year and weather. If there are any changes to the daily routine, these are communicated through the morning message. If there are no changes, then a foundation is taught during this time. Here the teacher and students are preparing to participate in the Morning Message activity. Ryan has just counted the number of boys in the class room and is writing it on the whiteboard. Simple math is an important skill to learn at early ages. Large Group Time Large Group Time is a more focused but fun English class based on the Era Books published in Australia. These precious books are designed to help students to begin recognition of simple words and sentence structures as early as two years of age. Interesting stories that capture the student’s attention and encourage speaking and their imaginations through related tasks, crafts and showtimes. Here the students are going through the first reading of the Era book, Sally’s Big Red Bag. The first reading is filled with anticipation at the stories twist ending. Here the teacher expands the story’s meaning and incorporates phonics to help the students to read and enjoy books on their own. Small Group Time Our Small Group Time is designed to give the students a more personal, one on one lesson with the teacher through more focus English classes, craft projects or life skills. These smaller group times allow the teacher to asses each student needs more closely and to assist the students that could use a little more attention in specific areas of learning. Here the students are learning how to tie-dye their own shirts. A good lesson in doing things for yourself, making choses in color and design. A fun activity but, designed to help students is similar activities like science class and food class to expand their knowledge of the world around them. The finished project and the proud and happy faces of the students “says it all”. Plan Do Review Plan Do Review is an aspect of the class’s daily routine that the students excitedly look forward too! The class is divided into to groups with the English teacher taking half. The teacher organizes an engaging start up activity to encourage the children to convey their plan for play time. The teacher guides the students in their language development in expressing their plans. During the Do time allotment, the students play and the teacher, if engaged, participates with the students in their play activities. If not engaged, the teach will parallel play or observe until invited to engage. The review time is for the students to again join the small group and express what they accomplished and whom they accomplished it with. This to is a teacher guided and language assisted activity. Here during his Plan Do Review time, this student chose to learn more about shapes and with the teacher designed different patterns and used English to communicate his ideas. The Plan do Review time is an opportune time for the students to use their imaginations and create wonders to play on. The teachers can and do engage and encourage the use of free speech during these activities. As teachers, our aim is not only to teach children English on paper, we also help them see the world through the multi-cultural lenses. Designing meaningful activities can up grade their skills in learning to get along with others, respecting others and to express themselves.
