Q&A WITH TOM MCGEE, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF SHOPPING CENTERS

Tom McGee
Tom McGee sees huge benefits and challenges in the shopping center industry
Could you tell us about your background, and how you came to ICSC?
I spent 26 years at Deloitte, where I was a partner. I look back at Deloitte very fondly, I have great friendships and my time there helped form me as a business professional. I also learned how to serve clients across a wide range of sizes and ownership structures.
What attracted you to this position?
I saw a huge industry that's essential to the economic, civic and social vibrancy of communities all over the world: an industry that impacts people's lives every day. In the U.S. alone, sales from shopping centers equal 15% of GDP. One worker out of 11 is employed in a shopping center. I also saw an industry that is innovating in the midst of change. I want to share those facts and many others about how the industry is shaping the future.
How important are shopping centers to the economy, aside from their percentage of GDP, and their high employment number?(除了对于GDP的贡献以及高就业率,购物中心对于经济还起到哪些重要的作用?)
This industry is critical not just to the broader economy, but also to local communities. For example, it generates nearly $141 billion and $24 billion, respectively, of sales-tax revenue and property-tax revenue, which fund important municipal services like firefighters, police officers, school services, and infrastructure like roadways and parks. The success of our industry is intertwined with supporting the needs of local communities.
What do you expect from the New York Deal Making Conference?(您对在纽约举办的Deal Making交易大会有什么预期?)
I expect another exceptional success, with 10,000 or more attendees. We've emerged from the recession stronger than ever, and we're adapting to changes in economics, demographics, technology and other factors. It's an exciting time for our industry, full of new possibilities, and I think this conference will reflect that.
How do you see the shopping center industry progressing in the digital age?(您如何看待数字时代购物中心行业的发展?)
It's really not a matter of bricks and mortar vs. online sales: it's both. People don't just want a transactional experience. They also want entertainment, restaurants, other experiential offerings and they want the latest technologies integrated into that experience.
The strength of the industry, its value to the economy, and the community, how integral the shopping center is to most people's everyday lives: those are the facts that need to be shared.
