瑞士實業家埃米爾‧喬治‧布爾勒 (Emil Georg Bührle, 1890-1956) 不僅是一名成功的商人，更熱衷於收藏藝術品。如今，布爾勒系列藏品廣為藝術愛好者所熟知，其收藏主要從十六世紀荷蘭繪畫到二十世紀重要藝術家作品為主，印象派和後印象派的作品尤其精湛，收藏質量亦備受推崇。這批布爾勒藏品將於不久後全數轉移到蘇黎世美術館，而此次於日本國立新美術館舉行的特展，則是轉移之前最後一次得以一覽布爾勒收藏全貌的絕佳機會。本展精選約60件傑出的現代藝術作品，其中有超過一半的作品為首次在日本展出，包括一幅超過四米，首次於瑞士以外國家展出的莫內晚年代表作品〈睡蓮〉。展覽規劃有9個主題，分別是「肖像畫」、「歐洲城市」、「19世紀法國繪畫」、「印象派的風景－馬奈、莫內、畢沙羅、西斯萊」、「印象派的人物－竇加、雷諾瓦」、「保羅·塞尚」、「文生·梵谷」、「20世紀初法國繪畫」、「現代繪畫」。
