The Jilin Provincial Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of Chinese fan paintings by renowned artists from Jilin Province, with a summer theme.
Grand Opening on June 28, 2023.

Fan art is an important part of traditional Chinese culture and serves as a significant form of expression for Chinese painting and calligraphy. It carries profound cultural heritage and meaning. Fans were initially used as ceremonial tools, symbolizing social status, hierarchy, and privileges. As the use of fans became more widespread, they gained favor among literati for their practicality and decorative qualities. The meticulous craftsmanship of artisans and the artistic skills of literati converged on the limited space of a fan, transforming it from a utilitarian object for displaying etiquette and seeking coolness into an art form showcasing the artist's creativity and aesthetic expression.

Whether it's Yang Xiu's painted fans or Xi Zhi's inscribed fans, they embody the wit, talent, and genuine emotions of literati. With advancements in fan-making techniques and the development of painting and calligraphy, fan paintings have become more diverse in terms of content and artistic expression. In terms of format, fan paintings can be broadly categorized into folding fan paintings and round-shaped fan paintings. Folding fans, appearing slightly later, gained popularity among the general public due to their convenience, aesthetic appeal, and graceful elegance. Round-shaped fans, on the other hand, exude elegance, beauty, and a wide variety of styles, predominantly used by women.

This exhibition, coinciding with the summer season, marks the Jilin Provincial Art Gallery's first thematic exhibition on fan paintings. It showcases 50 exquisite fan paintings by renowned artists from the province, covering landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures. The painting techniques are mostly freehand brushwork in ink, often combined with silk-mounted or boneless formats. The fan paintings include folding fan paintings, round-shaped fan paintings, and fan paintings with unique shapes. The rich themes and lively ink strokes vividly exhibit the artists' ingenious creativity and their playful and humorous spirit.
