1月10日，法国杂志《Closer》用了7个版面，图文并茂地报道59岁的法国总统奥朗德与41岁的女演员朱莉·葛耶的风流韵事。
Fifty-nine-year-old French President Francois Hollande is having an affair with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet, French magazine Closer alleged on Jan 10, publishing seven pages of photos it claimed backs up its story.
法国"第一女友"瓦莱丽·特里埃维勒随后被爆出因得知奥朗德与女演员偷情精神压力过大而住院休养。奥朗德威胁将起诉《Closer》杂志侵犯其隐私。
The press reported France's First Lady Valérie Trierweiler was hospitalized suffering from stress shortly after she learned of Hollande's alleged affair with the actress. Hollande threatened to sue Closer magazine, complaining of breach of privacy.
1月14日，奥朗德在爱丽舍宫举行新闻发布会，面对各大媒体的提问，只称"每个人在私生活中都有艰难的时候。"
"Everyone in his personal life can go through difficult periods," said Hollande at a news conference at the Elysee Palace on Jan 14, facing the media's queries about his reported liaison with Julie Gayet.
1月20日，法国新闻台iTele记者达尔蒙透露，奥朗德已经恢复单身状态，表示希望将来爱丽舍宫不再有第一夫人。
"Francois Hollande returned to the status of a potential first lady, saying, 'I don't want any more first ladies in the future at the Elysee'," Michael Darmon, a reporter with iTele, revealed on Jan 20.

法国政界对绯闻的反应倒是出奇一致，政府首脑和社会党成员纷纷表示需要尊重总统的私生活和隐私权，并支持奥朗德提出诉讼。甚至连极右党派民族阵线的主席马林·勒庞也表示支持奥朗德，她表示，只要不占用纳税人一分钱，每个人都拥有私生活受尊重的权利。
Political friends and foes alike have rallied around French President Francois Hollande. France's political elite and Socialist members backed the president, who was "perfectly right" to demand the respect for his private life and privacy and is considering legal action against Closer. One of the more surprising statements of support for Hollande came from Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front. "As long as it doesn't cost the taxpayer a penny... I believe everyone has the right to have their private life respected..." she said.

数位受访民众表示只要奥朗德的出轨在公众视线之外，自己完全可以接受。奥朗德的绯闻不会影响他管理国家的能力，也不会影响民众对他的看法。在法国，人们关心的更多是纳税金会不会被滥用。他们认为总统的私生活与其政策和决策无关。由于法国民众原先就不怎么喜欢瓦莱丽，奥朗德绯闻爆出后，支持率反而略有上升。
In interviews, several people said they were comfortable having Hollande keep his romantic liaison out of public view. Hollande's affair would not affect either the president's ability to run the country or the French population's view of him. The French are more concerned about misusing of taxpayers' money. They believe what happens in his private life has nothing to do with his policies or the decisions he makes. Support for Hollande actually went up a little after his affair was revealed out, as Valérie Trierweiler never truly won French hearts.
