English names can serve many purposes. They can help make it easier to make friends with foreigners as they might find Chinese names hard to remember, they can allow you to express yourself by giving yourself a name, and they can even help you seem more professional if you're looking to work in an MNC.
Whether you choose a classic, "proper" name or get more creative depends on what you want to use your name for. Generally, classic names will seem more professional while quirky names will help you stand out and get noticed.
Of course, different names will mean different things depending on the context. If you're in a punk rock band you might choose a more wacky name whereas if you want to work as a management consultant you might choose a more conservative one. In general, baby name books and websites are a great place to start to look for a name for yourself.
