On August 8, 2025, Hong Kong Customs made a significant discovery at Hong Kong International Airport, uncovering a drug trafficking incident involving concealed baggage. Approximately 3 kilograms of suspected cocaine, valued at around HK$2.4 million, was confiscated in the operation.
A 63-year-old female passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Freetown, Sierra Leone, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the same day. During the Customs clearance process, officers detected the suspected cocaine concealed in a hidden compartment within her checked suitcase. Subsequently, she was apprehended by authorities.
The arrested individual has been formally charged with trafficking in a dangerous drug. The case is scheduled to be presented at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on 11th August.
Hong Kong Customs remains committed to intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking activities through advanced intelligence analysis. The department issues a stern warning to the public, advising against involvement in drug trafficking for financial gain.
Individuals are cautioned against accepting offers or instructions to transport controlled substances into or out of Hong Kong, as well as carrying unknown or prohibited items for others.
Customs officials will persist in employing a risk-based approach, focusing on the identification and scrutiny of passengers from regions deemed high-risk to combat the scourge of transnational drug trafficking. Trafficking in dangerous drugs under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance is a severe criminal offence.
Upon conviction, the maximum penalty includes a fine of up to $5 million and potential life imprisonment.
