In 1994, CoCo Lee released her first album, with a few small words printed in the corner of the introduction: “Going international”. After that, she signed with an international record company, released English-language albums, and performed at the Academy Awards, stepping onto an increasingly large international stage as a Chinese singer.
CoCo Lee said she faced discrimination as a Chinese living and working in Western countries. At that time, there were no pop artists from China or even Asia on the music market and international stage.
"We have so many great talents, some of them better than Western singer I've ever seen, so I think we were just never given the chance." CoCo Lee said.
With the rapid development of China's economy after the millennium, more and more Chinese artists and talents have begun to make their mark on the international stage. As one of the most influential pop singers, CoCo Lee has achieved several “firsts” for Chinese singers in the international arena.
"My mom always said, ‘Don't forget your roots, don't forget where you came from.’ I'm Chinese, and I'm proud to be Chinese. I always remember that.”
"I am CoCo Lee and it has been 27 years since my debut. No matter how big I stand on the international stage, I can still proudly say that I am Chinese and I am from Hong Kong, China."
