草人火有一则漫画叫《南方》。漫画里,生活于南方而不自知的小朋友,大汗淋漓地吹着电风扇,向往着课本里那个秋天燕子必然到访的“南方”。“南方一定是一个无比好的地方——比任何地方都好”,天真的想象与脚趾头上蚊子的特写,精准地“叮”进了每个人的内心。
同样成长于南方的我,大部分时间在城市里度过。童年里,我几乎没有见过燕子。我常常会把这些错过的风景归咎于自身,就像《南方》里的孩子,发现自己所在的这个有大蜘蛛、大老鼠、很潮湿且永远不会下雪的地方,就是南方时,也不禁怀疑“我的生活是错的吗”。每一个孩子在成长过程中,都是如何校准和接受自己的生活与课本里的世界的错位?比起“课文里都是虚假的”这样的答案,我更喜欢漫画里的结尾:“我的生活并没有错,它只是不被看到。”
就像是“在节日醒来”的无所适从与无可奈何。展览的标题取自草人火的一幅同名画作:红温的画面中,一具姿态扭曲、僵硬的身体,像是有些费力地俯撑着。那种红,不像是喜庆的红,而是焦躁的、燃烧的,带着些愤怒和毁灭的冲动。在“节日”这样一个集体意义上的、仪式性的、狂欢式的无用时间中,这些情绪都显得有些莫名其妙。在节日醒来的那一刻,人们无法拒绝地脱离了某种秩序,随即又被卷进了某种既定的失序中。这样的莫名其妙,也常常不被看到。
莫名其妙是一个很有意思的词,既是描述某种不合时宜或不合群的奇怪情境,也可以解释为“难以言明其中的奥妙”。草人火的架上作品具有某种文学或语言学意义上的结构。画面上的人、物件与不同元素之间的组合关系,配上作品标题的文字,都隐含着多层次的异质符号。符号与符号之间的转化或联通,便常常传达出这样一种“莫名其妙”。这其中的稚拙与率真,更多时候关乎抵挡着俗常世界的人的孤独与失神,以及,与现实时刻保持着一步之遥的克制与勇气。

Caorenhuo has a comic titled The South. In the story, a child in the South, being negligent of the tropical weather, sits sweating profusely in front of an electric fan, yearning for "the South" described in textbooks, a place where swallows always arrive in autumn. "The South must be an incredibly wonderful place. It is better than anywhere else." This innocent imagination, juxtaposed with a close-up of a mosquito biting the child’s toe, precisely stings the heart of everyone.

I also grew up in the South. Spending most of my time in the city, I had rarely seen a swallow in my childhood. I often blamed myself for missing such sights, just as the child in the comic begins to question: "Is my life wrong?" upon realizing that the place they live in—with the presence of large spiders, big rats, relentless humidity, and absence of snow—is, in fact, the South. How does every child calibrate and come to terms with the dissonance between their life and the world described in textbooks? Rather than simply concluding that "textbooks are all lies," I prefer the comic’s ending: "My life is not wrong, it is simply unseen."

It is akin to the bewilderment and helplessness of “waking up on a festival day”. The exhibition's title comes from a painting of the same name by Caorenhuo: in a searing red composition, a twisted, rigid body appears to be struggling to prop itself up. The red is not the festive kind but rather one of agitation and combustion, tinged with anger and the impulse for destruction. In the context of a festival, a time that is collectively defined, ritualistic, and seemingly filled with revelry. Such emotions seem inexplicable. Yet, in that moment of waking up, one is inevitably pulled away from a certain order, only to be swept into a predetermined disorder. This inexplicability, too, often goes unnoticed.

"Inexplicable" is an intriguing word. It can describe a sense of oddness, something out of place or out of sync, yet it can also imply a mystery too profound to articulate. Caorenhuo’s paintings possess a structural quality similar to literature or linguistics. The relationships between figures, objects, and various elements in the compositions combined with the textual titles contain layers of heterogeneous symbols. The transformation and connection between these symbols often convey a sense of inexplicability. Within this naivety and sincerity lies the solitude and disorientation of those resisting the mundane world, as well as the restraint and courage of those who choose to keep a deliberate distance from reality.

草人火,1994年南方人,2017年本科毕业于武汉,2022年研究生毕业于北京,现生活居住于广州。从事架上绘画,闲暇时画点漫画。


Caorenhuo, born in 1994 in southern China, graduated with a bachelor's degree from Wuhan in 2017 and a master's degree from Beijing in 2022. Currently residing in Guangzhou,  focus on easel painting and occasionally create comics.


关于策展人 About Curator

骆钰槟,生活、工作于广州。她关注被宏大历史和社会结构遮蔽或压抑的个体表达,支持作为一种行动方式的艺术实践。中国美术学院设计学硕士,目前任职于广州美术学院美术馆。2024年入围上海当代艺术博物馆(PSA)青年策展人项目。

Curator Cora Luo Yubin is based in Guangzhou, China. She focuses on individual expressions that are often obscured or suppressed by grand narratives and social structures, viewing art practices as a form of activism. Cora currently works at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. She holds a Master's degree in Design History and Theory from the China Academy of Art. She was shortlisted for the 2024 Emerging Curators Project at the Power Station of Art (PSA) in Shanghai.
